The Holy Prophet (pbuh) never thought of marrying another woman as long as Khadijatul-Kubra (RA) was alive. Umme-Saudah (RA) bint Zama was the first woman to enter into the marriage with the Holy Prophet (pbuh) after the death of Khadijatul-Kubra (RA). She was about 50 years old when she was married to Muhammad (pbuh). She was first married to Sakran bin Umro (RA) bin Abd-Shams, who was her cousin. Her father was Zama bin Khais bin Abd-Shams. Her mother was "Shamoos bint Khais bin Omero. She was one of the earlier converts to Islam and suffered much since she embraced Islam. She had migrated to "Abyssinia" with her husband who died there. Sakran bin Umro (RA) had also embraced Islam. They had a son whose name was Abdur-Rahman.

Our Prophet (pbuh) was very much worried as there was no one to look after his (pbuh) children. One day Khaula bint Hakeem, came to the Prophet (pbuh) and asked him to have "Marriage". So that he (pbuh) should have a very good companion who could also look after the children. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) asked, Khaula with whom he should marry. Khaula bint Hakeem suggested the name of "Saudah (RA) bint Zama". The Prophet (pbuh) agreed to this. Saudah (RA) was also happy with the proposal and agreed for the marriage after consulting her father Zama.

Prophet (pbuh) Solemnised the marriage. The "Mehar" was 400 Dirhams. Thus Umme-Saudah (RA) got the honour to be "Ummul-Mumineen". Her brother, Abdullah bin Zama was not happy with the marriage as still he was not a "Muslim" but afterwards he was very sorry to think of this when he embraced Islam and used to seek Allah's forgiveness.

They were passing the days happily. Umme-Saudah (RA) took up the responsibilities to look after the children nicely. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) sometimes used to sit near her and asked her to tell him all the events that took place in "Abyssinia" and Prophet (pbuh) used to take much interest about Ruqayya (RA) and Othman bin Affaan (RA) who were also in "Abyssinia". In Mecca Mukarrama, they lived in the house of Khadijatul- Kubra (RA) along with the children.

One day when Othman bin Affaan (RA) & Ruqayya (RA) returned to Mecca Mukarrama from "Abyssinia" and visited the house of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). Umm-e-Saudah (RA) received them with great warmth and happiness. She asked them to take rest as they were tired of the journey. She was very obedient and dutiful. She surpassed all the other wives of the Prophet (pbuh). She was very generous, her generosity is shown by an incident which took place during the Caliphate of Umer Farooq (RA). Umer Farooq (RA) sent one sack with full of Dirhams to her, She distributed it as soon as she received it.

The unbelievers in Mecca Mukarrama were turning to be so cruel and there were no bound for the atrocities, they were showing to the believers i.e. to the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and his Companions. It became extremely difficult for the Mumineen to live in Mecca. Therefore the Prophet (pbuh) ordered them to migrate to "Madina-al-Munauwara". In due course when Allah (Subhanahu Tala) commanded, the Prophet (pbuh) also to migrate. He (pbuh) migrated to Madina-al-Munauwara with Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) and leaving Ali Karam Allah (RA) and his (pbuh) family in Mecca Mukarrama. He (pbuh) stayed with Abu Ayub Ansari in Madina. After sometime He (pbuh) sent Zaid bin Harith (RA) to bring Umme-Saudah (RA) and the children to Madina-al-Munauwara.

Umme-Saudah (RA) loved the Holy Prophet (pbuh) very much and when she was very old. She thought that the Prophet (pbuh) might not divorce her and she wished that she woke up on "Khiymah" in the Holy group of Ummul-Mumineen. Ummul-Mumineen A'isha Siddiqua (RA) narrated that Umme-Saudah (RA) gave her turn (visit of the Prophet (pbuh)) to A'isha (RA).

One day Umme-Saudah (RA) brought a cup of soup for the Holy Prophet (pbuh) while He (pbuh) was in A'isha's (RA) house. A'isha (RA) told Umme-Saudah (RA) to drink it. But she refused to drink. A'isha (RA) told her again to drink it otherwise would rub it on her face. A'isha (RA) rubbed some soup on her face. The Prophet (pbuh) kept laughing and told Saudah (RA) to rub it on A'isha's (RA) face too. So Saudah (RA) also rubbed it on A'isha's (RA) face and the Prophet (pbuh) continued laughing, and thus maintained justice and equality among his (pbuh) wives.

Once Umme-Saudah (RA) told to the Holy Prophet (pbuh) that last night she joined him (pbuh) in the prayer, and when He (pbuh) had a long "Ruku" (Bending on the knees) during prayer, she felt as it her nose would start bleeding and therefore she had to hold her nose very strongly to avoid bleeding. The Prophet (pbuh) started laughing having heard this from Saudah (RA). The Prophet (pbuh) used to make his wives feel happy in his (pbuh) company so that there should be happy and joyful atmosphere in the family life.

Umme-Saudah (RA) used to be fear stricken and tremble when she heard about the "Fitnatul-Dajjal" (i.e. how the Dajjal, who is Kafir would appear just before the "Khiyamah") and the people leave the real and religeous path and they would involve in "Shirk" and follow the path of Satan. This was known to A'isha (RA) and Hafza (RA). One day they made mention or "Dajjal" and Umme-Saudah (RA) having heard this rushed to room to hide herself. The room was very dirty and full of webs. A'isha Siddiqua (RA) and Hafsa (RA) started laughing at this site. At this very movement the Holy Prophet (pbuh) entered the house and enquired as to why they were laughing? The Holy Prophet (pbuh) told Umme-Saudah (RA) to come out as there was no "Dajjal". Umme-Saudah (RA)came out of the room and she could not help herself laughing on this. Such events take place where the entire family live like one unit in happy atmoshphere.

Umme-Saudah (RA) loved and obeyed to the Holy Prophet (pbuh) at every difficult time. In the battle of Badr, Sohail bin Umro, who was the brother of her former husband Sukran bin Umro; became a prisoner of war and he was handed over to Malik (RA) to bring him to Madina. While they were coming to Madina, Sohail bin Umro asked the permission so that he can ease himself. When he was permitted to do so, he dodged and ran away. Again he was arrested when the Prophet (pbuh) ordered to seek him. He was hiding behind a tree. He was brought to Madina as a prisioner with his neck and his both hands tied with a rope.

On seeing him in such a position Umme-Saudah (RA) asked him as to why he did not prefer to honourable death rather than to get such shameful life. Why he was not ashamed to be a prisoner. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) heard this and showed his anger to Umme-Saudah (RA) and said that she was inciting Sohail against Allah (Subhanahu Tala) & his Messenger. Umme-Saudah (RA) realised this and immediately sought apologies and the Holy Prophet (pbuh) accepted this and ordered that they should treat their prisoners with sympathy and kindness. Then the companions were so kind with their prisoners that they used to give food to the prisoners before they were take their own. Sohail was very much impressed and immediately embraced Islam.

Umme-Saudah (RA) did not perform Hajj after "Hajjatul-Wida".
She narrates: "I did Hajj and also Umra. Now I will stay at home as Allah (Subhanahu Tala) has ordered."

She narrated 15 "Ahadith". She died at the age of 72 years during the last days of the Caliph Umer Farooq's (RA) period. She was buried in "Jannatul Baqi"(Graveyard).
